Leah Lucas
Leah Lucas was raised in southern Alberta, Canada. From early childhood she reveled in the freedom to explore her world on horseback. She would forever be informed by miles of flat unending 360-degree views, covered with expansive blue skies, butted against the imposing Rockies in the distance. Developing a deep connection with the natural world, fostered by a profound love and understanding of horses, led to her life’s passion. Leah has spent her life raising, training, and showing these magnificent beasts; developing a thriving practice devoted to healing horses with physical and/or behavioral imbalances. Working with feel and light touch; enabled her to receive subtle equine energies that deeply guided her responses, bringing the most favorable results. Leah’s unique vernacular and system brought her great recognition, and respect. The demand for her services allowed her to travel extensively in the U.S. Leah is strongly drawn to Taos. For her, Taos exudes intimacy, mystery, and joy. “It forces the brush to move across a canvas with deliberation – intent on its purpose, with little choice but to express beauty.” Taos is enchanting – it draws you in like no other place. We are continually embraced by the burgeoning softs-capes, vast hard edges, superlative light, distinguished people and illustrious environs.
Artist’s Statement
What I value from my connection to landscape and to horses - freedom, communion, persistence, relying always on the feel of truth, rather than on truth as espoused by others - I bring to painting. I search always for uncompromising teachers and methods to achieve the best. Trained in the representational style; I seek images to awaken a resonance within, which I aim to translate onto canvas. I never know in advance what will speak to me; therefore, I openly attend to everything, awaiting the inner call that leads to action. Always, there are surprises. As an artist, I aspire to present what may be comfortably familiar in unique and sometimes startling ways.
