Dawning Pollen Shorty
Sometimes whimsical, always beautiful, Dawning Pollen Shorty's micaceous clay creations arise out of her spiritual connection to Earth. A native of Taos Pueblo, Dawning Pollen works in the traditional way of collecting raw material from the land to make the clay, using natural pigments to paint it and cedar wood for traditional outdoor firing. Dawning Pollen Shorty is the daughter of potter Bernadette Track and Navajo sculptor Robert Shorty. Her grandfather, Dooley Shorty, was a master jeweler and WWII Navajo Code Talker. Dawning Pollen attended the Institute of American Indian Art and the University of New Mexico Fine Arts Program. She now teaches at the University of New Mexico Taos and offers private workshops, classes and demonstrations. Her goal is to share traditional micaceous pottery and process thereby sharing her cultural heritage as an indigenous person, woman and artist of Taos Pueblo.
